Hi! I just download UltraMon and would like to first congratulate you on making it such and excellent piece of software. It's truly amazing.

A small bug I noticed -- if you have two or three icons on your desktop of the same name i.e. a file, a folder and maybe an image, all named "temp", the "restore" in desktop positiong makes them all overlap each other even though you didn't save it like that.

Just an update.

Take care and best of luck with everything,
Surya

Thanks for your bug report. I'll look into it, but I'm not sure if it can be fixed.

It seems that to fix the bug, you would/should use the full file name and its extension as the icon name. Is that not possible?

The problem is that there is no documented procedure for positioning desktop icons, so workarounds need to be used. The one used by UltraMon has only access to the display name of the icons, not the full file name.

Other icon management products have the same limitation, for example EzDesk.

There may be better workarounds though, I'll look into that.

I am investigating an issue that may be relevant and helpful here in some way.

How is it that the 'recent' folder (search your Windows root drive for it) shows shortcuts even for folders that were recently used, while the Start Menu's recently used 'Documents' menu excludes the folder shortcuts in the 'recent' folder?

This seems to indicate that there is a way to discern desktop shortcut icons by their full name. If you look in the 'recent' folder, all shortcuts are of type shortcut, but their names include the file type extension, unless they are folder shortcuts. Isn't that all you need?

No, what would be needed is a link between the icon position on the desktop and the full path/filename of the icon.

The files that make up the desktop icons are easily available in \Documents and Settings\<user>\Desktop, but no desktop position information is stored there.

Maybe I totally misunderstand, but I thought the problem was that "icons on your desktop of the same name". I was saying that the icons don't truly have the same name. Windows would not allow it. Just try putting muliple files of the truly same name in any folder. It's not going to happen. Therefore, you just have to access the real, or full, name of the shortcuts.
