Just great to finally see a new version.
Installed it on top of the "old" beta... So far, works great, without a reboot. The main features I was missing were the stretch window button and the switch monitor button in the title bars. Both are there now, nice in Aero style. Good job there!
One thing: The installer says something like "The following programs use files that need to be updated. Please close the programs and press retry, press Exit to Cancel". Then it shows a huge list of services (20 or so?) with cryptic names, that I don't even know how to stop if I wanted to... That was pretty intimidating.
I pressed the Igore button and setup finished and all looks OK though. I wonder if I need a reboot though.
I bet it's a default installer feature, but it didn't seem right...

Installed this morning, so far MUCH improved, the windows are all showing on the correct smart task bars, drag and drop between windows seems more reliable, the buttons are working great, and no crashes so far. I too got the installer warning, ignored it and rebooted just to be sure.
However I notice that a few "windows" are now showing on my smart taskbar that didn't before. For example the Vista Sidebar, a customer taskbar folder and "slide show" not sure what that is. Clicking and right clicking on these windows has no effect - but a small price to pay for the other improvements!

Unlike the other people on the list, I actually stopped all of the services it asked me to stop. Just press ctrl-alt-del and choose 'task manager'. Find the services, and end process.
No problems at all. Glad to see the buttons working like they are suposed to again.

Christian Studer 2007-12-16 01:40
Niels, usually you can safely ignore the warning, but if you have any weird issues after upgrading a reboot should fix the problem.
This happens because the processes have a DLL from UltraMon loaded, which gets replaced during the upgrade and setup then notices that the file is in use.
Steve, I'm not seeing the issue with the task buttons for the sidebar etc on 64-bit Vista, would I need to do anything special to reproduce this issue?

Just installed over Beta 1 and all working very well so far. Thought I'd drop a note to say thanks very much for getting the new version out - I only purchased a license a couple of weeks ago and it's been an essential piece of software!
Thanks again ... really looking forwards to the final release :)

For some reason it crashed on my system. It worked fine until I played a few games, (Stalker, Half Life 2, SniperElite... all in multi-player mode), then it only showed a black wallpaper and it would crash when I tried to change it. Even after 2 reboots it would only show black. Not sure why this happened but wanted to let you know. I uninstalled and went back to version 3.0.0. I will keep an eye on this forum to see if anyone else has a problem.

Mike, what's the error message you got?
Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com

Mike in Phoenix 2007-12-16 04:17
No error message. Ultramon would simply freeze, (program not responding), as I was trying to apply a wallpaper. I tried "seach for solution online" with no results. Version 3.0.0 has worked perfectly for me, but I will download the new one again later today and try it again.
Thx again for the great program btw!

You would get this error if UltraMon fails to set its wallpaper as the active wallpaper.
What happens if you right-click the UltraMon icon in the system tray and select Wallpaper from the menu, then either select a different wallpaper or create a new one and hit Apply?

I just installed the new version today and it's great! I love the new buttons in vista, but I did find a compatibility problem. The program seems to stop responding while I am running Paragon Drive Backup Personal 8.51, i.e. the buttons don't appear in the title bar and clicking on the system tray icon doesn't work. However, as soon as I close the program, its fine again.

Daniel, does Task Manager show close to 100% CPU usage when this happens?
So far I haven't been able to reproduce this issue, I backed up a 100 MB partition to a local folder with Paragon Drive Backup Personal 8.51 on 32-bit Vista, but didn't have high CPU usage and noticed no problems with the UltraMon buttons.

Nice to see beta 2 finally out! Installed over b1 fine, and at least some of the hooks seem to be better - tried launching two progs that I knew had issues, and they behave now. Pity about the Windowblinds 6 vs XP issue with the (none)transparent taskbar. What do you mean by 'no fix'? There is no way around it or there will be but not yet. Some of us will not be upgrading to Vista for a while.... NB: I can live with the lack of transparency!

Christian,
The Beta 2 fixed most of my issues, but I still can't resize my auto-hidden taskbar on my secondary monitor.
On my primary monitor I always uses two rows for displaying open Windows on that monitor, but on my secondary monitor it always displays just one row and I can't find anyway to change that.
The best way would be if the taskbar on the secondary monitor defaults with the same size and options (auto hide) as the primary monitor's taskbar.

Hello, good to have the new beta available.
I´m still having the problem with the UltramonBar when second monitor is at the Left of the main monitor.
Will there be an upgrade or fix soon?
Thanks
|
Christian Studer 2007-12-17 05:50
Steve, currently I have no plans to add support for this. The problem is that UltraMon would need in-depth knowledge of WindowBlinds skins to do the same thing. For the main taskbar, it seems to be WindowBlinds which adds the transparency effect.
Ola, you'll need to unlock the main taskbar, the UltraMon taskbars will then get unlocked as well and you can resize them.
sikorski, what kind of problems do you have with the UltraMon taskbar?

All went well with the install.. I see it still has the bug where it scatters some of my recently added files on the desktop. And when I click save positions. It still scatters a few old files on restart.
But all in all I haven't been able to get it to crash.. So that was my biggest gripe.
Thank you for giving us an early christmas present!

Luiz 2007-12-17 07:10
Christian,
Thanks for the reply. Seems that when I installed B2, it also changed the resolution of my monitor 1. Once I sized it properly and swapped Wallpapers, it seems to work fine - even after returning to the original wallpaper. Probably some settings there.
The other thing I just found out (I was working remotely earlier) is that when installed, B2 changed the primary monitor setting (#2 was the primary where my main taskbar is located) and I was getting a bunch of strange boxes in the taskbar (mirrored in monitors 1, 3 & 4) as if programs were open but (strange names, BTW). My CPU usage also went through the roof (100%)! I have just reset the primary monitor back to my #2 and it appears to have solved it... so let's see what happens.
Keep you posted.
Luiz
|
Luiz 2007-12-17 07:35
Christian,
Still happening (can email you a screen shot if you need).
Right now, on all mirrored taskbars, I have various boxes of what appear to be open programs with strange names... "Context Menu" (3 of them), "Default IME", "M", "Send/Receive", a blank/no name, etc... the main taskbar which is located on my primary monitor seems fine. And I can't close them. Clicking on them nothing appears on the screen and a right click doesn't give me a menu to to select close.
However, when the screen (and the taskbars) is fully refreshed, they disappear.
My SmartTaskbar setting is to "mirror - each taskbar showing all tasks".
Any thoughts?

Hi Christian,
Thanks for the quick replay, the problem that I have is that the Ultramon Taskbar on the second monitor, when selected to be on the left its not doing the alpha effect and some times it looks funny.
Thanks

Nice beta, so far looks nice.
One bug, though...when I move or resize a window the Ultramon Button follows behind VERY slowly. Like it's chasing the parent, a second behind.
|
Christian Studer 2007-12-17 10:26
Luiz, I'm going to look into the taskbar issue for the next release, I've been able to reproduce the issue when enabling the nView Desktop Manager on XP with Visual Studio 2005 running.
sikorski, this seems to be a Vista issue, you'll have the same problem if you move the main taskbar to the left monitor. Currently I'm not aware of a workaround/fix for this.
ScottH, performance might get improved in a later release, but will also depend on overall system performance and current CPU usage.

With the new Beta 2 running on Windows Vista Home Ultimate 32-bit, when using Windows Photo Gallery to view photos, press F11 to turn it to slideshow mode on the primary monitor. Scroll through some photos with the arrow keys. Then hit escape to end the slideshow.
Ultramon has created many tasks on the main window taskbar (when Vista groups them into a single item, it shows "UltraMon", but individually they have no title, only an icon for the Windows Photo Gallery application). When you select one of them on the taskbar, two buttons appear for UltraMon's switch monitor/maximize in a tiny square - looks like they're supposed to be a part of the title bar - except there is no title bar.
UltraMon has also created the same number of "empty" tasks on the smart taskbar on the second monitor as well. After testing, I have seven tasks on each taskbar with no text and the Windows Photo Gallery Icon. The only way to make them go away is to kill the UltraMon process and UltraMonTaskbar process.

Thanks, Christian.
Here are a few more anomalies with B2... After doing some software updates(Norton in this case) and having to re-boot the system, it now has my monitors all confused!
They are set as 1,2,3,4 L-to-R and I used to have my main taskbar on 2. It is now on 3, I send apps to monitor 2 and it shows up on 3, do it again and it shows up on the right monitor, the taskbars on the other monitors were not sized as the main (rebooted in single row instead of double row), etc.
I have not been able to get my main taskbar (the one with the start button and quick start icons on the right) back to monitor 1...
However, some of the issues I had before when shutting down (having to "End Program") have diminished.

mimi74, this is a Vista issue, I'm not aware of a workaround or fix. Happens if you have a monitor to the left of the primary.
mjh, I haven't been able to reproduce this issue on 32-bit Vista, what other applications are you running?
Huvason, I've seen this on XP when enabling the nView Desktop Manager with Visual Studio 2005 running, I'll look into this for the next release.
Luiz, that's probably due to something else, UltraMon won't change the display configuration by itself. Changing the monitor arrangement via UltraMon menu > Display Settings should fix the problem. To move the main taskbar to a different monitor, make sure it is unlocked, you can then drag it with the mouse.

Christian,
I'm sorry but I think you may be wrong on this one. I have had (or had) the same monitor arrangement since I setup this new system over a year ago. Everything worked fine until I installed the new beta version. I had not and did not change the monitor arrangement or order. Something happened after I installed the new beta version.
Interestingly enough, now when I connect remotely to my system at the office and try to cycle through the monitors, it sometimes seems to go through in different order. Strange.
BTW, when I left the office. I rebooted the system and left with nothing (no apps) running. That was yesterday. When I connected to the system today, the first thing on the screen was an error message for the Wallpaper. Same error I was getting when I firsts installed.
It is starting to seem that the new beta version isn't as stable as the old version. New goodies and some things fixed but new errors being generated...
Well... that's why it is a "beta" version, right?
Thanks for looking into all this stuff. Let me know what info (if any) you need from me on the system.

Bob, some things you can check:
- do you have UltraMonRes.dll in the C:\Program Files\UltraMon\Resources\en folder?
- if you open Info.ini from the same folder, is the version 101?
- is the language set to English under UltraMon Options > General?
Luiz, do you have a display profile set up which gets applied at system startup, or an application shortcut with custom display settings, or are you using the mirroring feature? These are the only UltraMon features which change display configuration.
Patrick G, I have uploaded an update for the Smart Taskbar, please let me know if that fixes the problem for you.

FYI: Just working with PowerShellPlus (PSP) from ShellTools (www.powershell.com latest update) I noticed an issue with UltraMon Move/Resize icons. They appear correctly on the Title Bar of PSP, but there seems to be another set on the yellow bar area below the PSP tool bar. If you move or resize PSP they (UltraMon icons) drop onto the desktop and become orphaned. Not sure whether this is a PSP or UltraMon issue. I have let Karl Prosser know at ShellTools also. Thanks, Pete

The problem still exists in Vista where the if you have a secondary monitor to the left of the primary monitor with two wallpapers, the taskbar is only half transparent. I thought I read in another thread that you were going to try some kind of black background fix for that or something.
|
Christian Studer 2007-12-27 10:58
Chris, this seems to be a Vista issue.
The black background for the wallpaper bitmap was implemented in 3.0 Beta 2 but will only give better results with some display configurations. I'm not aware of a real fix/workaround for this.

Anderson Imes 2007-12-28 00:22
I'm seeing the same thing MJH reported - lots of ultramon-related taskbar items with no title showing up. It looks as though you are using external windows and "pasting" these into the titlebar of the application for the quick buttons for switching windows, etc (which is why when I drag my windows around the screen, these butttons seem to have to "catch up" to the window - cute). I think those taskbar items are for the external windows (Windows Vista preview shows only a picture of the switch monitor button - pretty good indicator).
This happens for me on occasion, but I couldn't tell you how to reproduce it. It's not very often, though, and closing and reopening ultramon fixes the issue.

I appoligize.. I didnt mean to imply that the actual app was flipping from one screen to the other. I only mean the item on the taskbar is staying is flipping back and forth between monitors. The actual browser is staying where I put it. I wouldn't have blamed that on Ultramon if that was the case.

Christian Studer 2008-01-04 11:14
If it's really due to upgrading the display driver, there's most likely nothing that can be done, except installing the older version of the driver.
If you want to do further testing, you could reinstall the previous version of UltraMon you had installed and check if enabling/disabling secondary monitors is faster.

If Outlook main window is on 2nd monitor and an email *OPENS* on monitor 1, then I delete the email by clicking "X" on email window, Outlook responds with "The operation failed. An object could not be found." The email "deletes", but I often have trouble getting rid of the error window; clicking OK just spawns another window. This weird behavior did not happen with Beta 1.

This beta works great on my XP system. Resolved the problems I was having with MS Office 2007.
Thanks Christian!

Kurt,
I haven't been able to reproduce this issue, deleting a mail on monitor 1 with Outlook on monitor 2 worked fine. I tested with Outlook 2007 on 64-bit Vista.
Does the problem go away if you disable window buttons for Outlook 2007, or if you close UltraMon?
You can disable window buttons for the application via UltraMon Options > Compatibility.

Christian,
The problem seems to come and go. It has something to do with which monitor Outlook starts (opens) and where the email itself opens (other monitor). It just happened a few minutes ago with the first email I opened and deleted, but did not happen with subsequent openings and deletions. I'm not even positive it's UltraMon, except that I never saw it with Beta 1 and I've not made any other software changes to this computer ... I'm not sure it's worth a lot of troubleshooting unless others report the same.

Hey Christian.. The taskbar switch problem happened with Windows Explorer now too. So its not just the browser.

I'm having a couple issues with beta2 which is actually working quite well overasll.
The 1st issue is that Ultramon consistently crashes every time I close the Windows Live Messenger window (this was reported by HomeY earlier in the thread). If I minimize the window before closing it, it doesn't repro but simply clicking the X kills Ultramon every time.
The 2nd issue is regarding moving windows between monitors. It's intermittent, but sometimes it simply doesn't work. When I hit my hotkey to move to the Next Window or click the icon in the title bar, the window will blink but it remains where it is so I have to go back to the old-school days and Restore the window and move it manually.

SHaase, I haven't seen this myself so far, does this only happen with certain applications, or have you noticed anything which seems to cause the problem?

I am also seeing th eissue of UltraMon shutting down in response to closing another program. In my case UltraMon closes (100% of the time) when I close the HighPoint Raid Management Console application.

Skier, most likely this is the same issue as with Live Messenger, will be fixed in the next release.

Christian,
I'm sure you'll have this issue licked very soon. It's bizarre but I have no issue with Windows Live Messenger (though I don't use it often), it's only the HighPoint RAID Management Console software that causes this issue for me. I can live with it in the short term.
Other than that beta 2 is working very well - thanks!

Another (minor) issue. The expand across both screens and move screens buttons on the top tool bar normally sit flush with the upper border of the window. However, in Skype they don't; there's a small gap.
It's the only application I've noticed this oocurring in.

The above issue has dissappeared following a re-boot! Probably explains why I'd not noticed it before.

I have Vista 32-bit laptop computer with UltraMon Beta 2. This software largely works great! I have one semi-minor issue where after docking the live laptop in a docking station, UltraMon task items show up in the task bar. One blank UltraMon task shows up for each active program.
Laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad T60; docking station has two LCD displays.
I can provide a bitmap if you have some place to put it.
Thanks, Jim

Jim, installing the Smart Taskbar update on top of 3.0 Beta 2 should fix the problem.
