Hi,
I have purchased UltraMon as I love what it is able to do. I use it as a replacement of nVidia Desktop Manager which I have disabled.

Issue 1)
While UltraMon is MOST OF THE TIME--just GREAT--at time, it completely goes berserk and changes the settings all on its own:
- disables secondary monitor
- does not restore icon position on desktop
- changes resolution of primary monitor

I have to then set-up everything again, etc.; and that is pretty annoying.

Any comments/suggestions as how to avoid that?

- Also, I run Ultramon on a laptop (using it screen) and a flat desktop monitor plugged in.

I cannot figure out how to make the laptop screen the PRIMARY monitor and the flat screen the secondary. Perhaps this contributes to the problem above (although I believe it should not.)

I am not using Mirroring and have different resolutions on running independently on both screens.

1) That's most likely not related to UltraMon, I'm not sure though if this is a video card driver or operating system issue. To verify this, check if you still have the problem without UltraMon running or installed.

As a workaround for the issue with the display settings, you could set up an UltraMon display profile via UltraMon menu > Display Profiles.

2) Usually UltraMon can't change the primary monitor on laptops, but you could do this via the software for the video chipset, or by pressing the key to change between the internal and external monitor, for example on my Dell this is Fn+F8.

Christian,
1) I never experience this issue without UltraMon.

You are recommending setting up a display profile and enabling apply n log-in, I imagine?

Or perhaps, whenever the "problem" returns, just choose the profile and "apply it"?

2) I am hesitant to use the Fn+F8 because when I do, it screws up the Ultramon setup and I have to re-configure everything.

Probably, this is due to the fact I am not using it correctly?

Would there be any benefits to always have the laptop as the primary (even when a flat screen is plugged in)?

The obvious one would seem that when I would unplug the external monitor, the desktop icon set (which is always on the laptop monitor) would not be affected and the transition between 1 or 2 screens would be smooth...?

I am slightly confused I guess....

1) Unfortunately I don't know what would cause this, UltraMon doesn't automatically disable secondary monitors or change display settings.

If you find out anything else, for example it only happens when launching a specific application or similar, let me know.

You could have the display profile set up to get applied after login, you can then still apply it manually via UltraMon menu > Display Profiles.

2) The problem is most likely that changing the primary monitor changes the monitor numbers, for example the primary monitor always remains monitor 1. This would cause problems for some UltraMon features.

Always using the internal monitor as primary would fix that, but you may prefer to use the external monitor as primary for other reasons. Currently there is no good solution for this, but I'm taking this into consideration for UltraMon 3.

Christian,
This has happened again, and it is definitely UltraMon, sorry to have to say.
When I booted up this morning, my whole display setup with completely screwed, monitors inverted, resolution completely changed, desktop icons in a completely different position (evidently), taksbars screwed, etc.
Trying to re-apply a profile I had setup did nothing at all to help--and screwed it even more.
I had to start UltraMon's configuration from scratch, etc.
I will say that it is VERY annoying and time wasting.
Can you please look into this?

Do you have a display profile set up which gets applied automatically after login?

UltraMon otherwise doesn't change display settings.

I have a display profile but have not checked the "apply after log in".
I guess I should do that then?
stef_204   2007-12-07 05:58
can I go back to display profile and edit so it "applies settings after login"? Or must I create a new profile?

If you have one set up, I would recommend deleting it, maybe that's what causes the problem you're seeing.

To do this, go to Start Menu > Programs > Startup and delete any shortcuts to display profiles listed there.
