I have a Lenovo 3000 c100 laptop with win xp pro. It has a external vga connector for a external monitor. The video card in the laptop is a Intel GMA 900 card with 128mb. Will it work? If so should I install without monitor or with monitor already connected. The monitor won't always be connected due travel. And I might need to use different external monitors depending on travel locations.

That should work fine, it doesn't matter if you install UltraMon with or without the external monitor connected.
One issue specific to laptops is that you usually can't change the primary monitor via UltraMon.
