I use my laptop docked and undocked. Whenever I dock I have to go through the pain of -enable second monitor -position it so it's "above" my latop display -drop the "secondary" apps (SQL Server, Gaim, SmartFTP for instance) on to the second monitor
UltraMon looks like it can manage the smarts around positioning the second monitor for me, but can it pick up the profiles for apps that need to be on the second monitor and put them there when it's available (and put 'em back on the main display when it's not)

UltraMon display profiles can handle the first two items, provided that you don't want to set the external monitor as primary (UltraMon usually can't change the primary monitor on laptops).
Are the applications already running when you dock, or would you launch them after docking?

the apps would already be running when I dock, so would just like to have the apps move from where-ever they are on the laptop off to the secondary display

UltraMon has no direct support for positioning a set of running applications, but it would be possible to do this with a custom script. Let me know if you are interested in this.
An application which should be able to do this is ZMover.

thanks Christian, I'd had a play with ZMover before discovering UltraMon and found it a bit clunky (and didn't seem to cope with the automagic appearance/disappearance of monitors) If it's possible to run a script that searches through open apps and repositions them when a profile is selected I'd be interested in playing... Got a project launching in two weeks which is kinda taking all my brain-cells at the moment but when that's stable I'll have time to go through the scripting stuff

It would be possible to create a script which enables the secondary monitor, then moves applications identified by their window caption to the secondary monitor.
Moving all open applications to the secondary monitor isn't possible because UltraMon provides no way to enumerate all open windows.
