I'm almost ready to buy ultramon, but a coworker asked me how to do something and I'm all hosed up and can't figure out how to get it to work. You'd think I could do it, but this might keep me from a sale. :-)
I have a Thinkpad T42, with an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. I also have an external 17" LCD monitor. Normally, I want the LCD to be the main screen (#1, with the start menu, etc.) and the laptop screen as the secondary monitor with the desktop extended onto it. When just using the laptop, I of course need IT'S screen to be the primary (and only) screen.
I'm having difficulties getting this to work. I have the dual setup going fine - everything works great. But I can't seem to get the "single monitor" mode to work and be able to easily switch between the two, which I imagine should be easy to do. I tried doing display profiles, but it seems like every time I set the LCD as the primary monitor, I can't set the laptop as the primary for the other profile without changing things in the Windows Display properties, which in turn kills the LCD as the primary for the dual setup.
Does this make any sense? I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong. Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately UltraMon usually can't change the primary monitor on laptops.
What you could do is use the laptop's function key to switch between the internal and external monitor to change the primary monitor, then use UltraMon menu > Disable/Enable Secondary to disable/enable the secondary monitor.
On my Dell Latitude, the key is labeled CRT/LCD.

Hi Pete,
I had the same problem with a Thinkpad T43. I found out that I could use the "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobile" (which appears as a tray icon) to change which display was the primary display. Then everything else worked fine.
Hope this helps!

Hmmmmm, this T42 comes with an ATI driver, and I don't readily see anything like that that will switch which display is the primary display...guess I'll check google and see if anyone else has run into this.
Unfortunately, it kinda sucks to find this out 5 days before my trial expires :-/ I really like(d) ultramon, and for 90% of my time I'm probably at my desk with the external monitor as primary and the laptop as secondary, and everything works great. But for the occasional time I need to take my laptop to a meeting or something, it's really kind of a PITA if I have to open up display properties, change which monitor is primary, that then hoses up the resolutions for everything, etc., and then use a hotkey or something to change ultramon profiles.....it just seems like more work than it should be.
Any chance that ultramon will eventually have the ability to see all connected displays and be able to change which is primary, etc.?

I'm going to look into this for UltraMon 3, but don't know yet if it can actually be done.

under the display / advanced tab in winxp, there is an ATI 'displays' panel. Under each of your monitors there are a couple of icons and a 1/2.
Selecting 1 on for your monitor and 2 for your lcd will swap the primary display.

Add my vote to those looking for this functionality as well. I came across UltraMon looking for a way to accomplish exactly what Pete was asking. I've got an IBM TabletPC. I work about 50% docked and connected to an external LCD monitor and 50% away from the office. When docked, I use the external LCD as the primary display. I'm interested in being able to keep MS OneNote open on the laptop while docked so I can jot down notes, phone messages, markup documents, etc.

Dear Christian
I have a Toshiba Tablet with NVIDIA and I really want to set my tablet as secondary monitor and external LCD as primary. I read may forums but don't know if you were able to enable this in ultra mon 3.0 - can you confirm please?
Also if not, how do I get NVIDIA to swap primary and secondary I can't see this any where in advanced properties...
Thanks
David

That's not in 3.0 Beta 1, I'm going to look into this for a later release.
Usually you'll have a tab for the Nvidia card under advanced display properties, if not try if installing the latest drivers from the Nvidia website fixes the problem.

To make the external LCD the primary monitor use the laptops'function keys to display only on the external monitor. The laptop monitor should be off. Then click on the UltraMon icon on the taskbar to enable the secondary monitor. This will cause the laptop lcd to be the secondary screen.
I have been using this setup for months on an HP Zd8000 and a 19" LCD running both on Vista and XP.

Hadthe same problem witn laptop being secondary monitor. Just push your function (f8) key or whichever is your screen function until the display only shows on the laptop. Then go into personalization and display settings and click on the 2 which should now be the secondary monitor and click extend screen box. Took care of my issue.
