Beta 4 of UltraMon 2.0 is now available for download. New in this release:
  • UltraMon Desktop: create and manage multi-monitor desktop wallpapers. This is the replacement for the Wallpaper Designer, fully integrated into UltraMon and with the capability to edit and preview wallpapers. Get all the details about this new feature here
  • Run OpenGL screen savers even if your system doesn't support OpenGL with multiple monitors: UltraMon Screen Saver can disable and enable secondary monitors, allowing you to run a fully accelerated OpenGL screen saver on the primary monitor
  • Various bug fixes and improvements
For detailed information about Beta 4, or if you are upgrading from a previous version, take a look at the release notes.

For developers: the SDK has also been updated, you can download the latest version here.

Please post comments, suggestions and bug reports in this forum. Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Hmm... the screen saver works, it disables the secondary, but when I end the screensaver and it restores the secondary monitor it should put the application windows back into place on the secondary display. Now it just turns on the display leaving applications stranded in the primary display instead.

With the wallpaper designer, you really need to add a proportional fit as well. So if I have a wallpaper that's oddly shaped, it'll resize it only based along the longest axis. That way the image is as large as possible, but not distored the way "stretch" does.

Hi Tom,

when you disable/enable secondary monitors from the UltraMon menu, does UltraMon restore the original window positions? On my system, the screen saver works fine, windows are moved to their original positions after re-enabling secondary monitors.

Proportionate fit/stretch is planned for the next release, and will certainly be in 2.0 final.

What OS are you running? I had problems with it in Win9x/ME, but Win2k tackles it fine :)

I'll have to test more... on my work machine with Win2k dual monitors and the secondary on the right it didn't place the windows back. On my home system, same setup with Win2k & same graphics cards but with secondary on the left side, it worked correctly.

I'll check again with my work machine on Monday and see if it's repeatable on that one.

Found it... I was using a non opengl screensaver. There's lots of times where I'd like to blank out the second monitor, and I tried running that cure for cancer screensaver on the primary and then disabling the secondary monitor. When I end the screensaver the windows aren't restored to the second monitor, they stay in the primary.

That shouldn't make any difference. But if you want a blanked secondary monitor, just don't select a screen saver for it. UltraMon will blank the monitor using the background color you specified on the Options page.

Regarding the problem with restoring window positions: if you disable/enable secondary monitors without running a screen saver, are window positions restored afterwards?

Yes, positions are restored if I don't do it with a non-opengl screensaver, and also if I just double-click the ultramon icon in the system tray area. This is the only example I have of when it doesn't restore the window position.

I haven't been able to reproduce this so far, using the United Devices Cure Cancer and various other non-OpenGL screen savers on Win2000, with secondary monitors to both sides of the primary.

Has anyone else seen this problem?
