Excel 97 can be opened and maximized. If I attempt to switch monitors or spread across two monitors, excel crashes. I am using the UltraMon trial version.

Can you move and desktop-maximize Excel 97 using the custom menu commands (right-click on the window title bar)?
On my system, the custom window buttons don't work with Excel 97, but don't cause a crash.
You can disable the custom window buttons for the application under Options > Window Title Bar.

Thanks for the workaround. I can use it to maximize, minimize, and and move to other monitor. Maximizing across desktop extends the application window, but does not extend a spreadsheet. Perhaps because I am using different resolutions on the monitors?

That's a limitation of Excel 97, Excel 2000 and later will stretch the spreadsheet as well.
