Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Suddenly, I have problems moving windows by their titlebar

Hello:

I have 3.0. Beta 1 and "enable moving of maximized windows using the mouse" checked. But today, I started having problems moving windows. I could not drag them to anotehr monitor (I have three). The button for moving did not help either. I deleted the smartbar (in Registry), and it helped – for a while.

I have not had much problems with UM, so I am kind of not well equipped to troubleshoot. Does anyone have any clue as to what I should check?

Best regard,

Does restarting UltraMon fix the problem?

I have just installed the new beta, and it seems to have taken care of the problem. If not, Christian, I will let you know.

Christin, I am still having problems.

I can move maximized screens to the main monitor (the one with the main taskbar), but when I move certain screens from that monitor to one of my two other, the double vertical/horizontal arrows show up in the "to" monitor, but when I let go of the mouse button, nothing happens. If I then go back to the main monitor and click on the (un)Restore button, the screen jumps (with the reduced size invoked by the (un)Restore button) to the "to" monitor. Very weird behavior.

Also, when I move a screen, the Move Window button and the Maximize to Desktop button become "unclued" from the title bar and only snaps back in place on the titlebar after a delay.

Could this behavior be caused by nVidia? Any settings in the nVidia software that I should change to get this behavior fixed?

I'll try anything!

Disabling the nView Desktop Manager would be worth a try, you should be able to do this via Control Panel.

You may need to restart the system after making the change.

Regarding the issue with the buttons: performance might get improved in a later release, but it also depends on overall system performance and current CPU load.

When I try to drag an MS Word 2000 window from the main monitor to one of the side monitors, the cross arrows move over to the side monitor, but when I let go off the left mouse button, the window in question remain on the main monitor, seemingly maximized, but movable!!!

When I then drag the window over to the side monitor, in order to make it truly maximized, I have to click on the (un)Restore button and then on the Restore button again.

Then, if I drag the (now maximized) window back to the main monitor, it works, but the window again seemingly maximized, but is movable! Press the (un)Restore button and then the Restore button again to make the window truly maximized on the main monitor.

I hope that this may give you some clues to what is happening. If I may venture a guess: your changing for UM to work with Word 2007 has "unhinged" something in how UM works with Word 2000. But that is only a guess.

I just moved a window (app: Archivarius 3000) from the main monitor to one of the side monitors, and it worked, except that left on the main monitor was a copy of a piece of the application's title bar (I will send an image file).

I haven't been able to reproduce the issue with Word 2000, dragging the maximized window worked fine for me with UltraMon 3.0 Beta 2.

Testing was done on Windows XP SP2 with both the SR-1 and SP3 release of Word 2000.

Did you disable the nView Desktop Manager? If it's not disabled, dragging of maximized windows may be done by nView and not UltraMon.

I have, as far as I know, closed the nVidia Control Panel, but I will check again to be sure.

I will also uncheck UltraMon's max window dragging and drag with nVidia and see how it works.

I find, so far, one nVidia file in the Task Manager – Processes, and that is nvsvc32.exe (User Name: SYSTEM.

Do you know what this file does, and if it is necessary, or if it can be closed down?

This might also be used by the video card driver, I would probably leave this running.

To disable the nView Desktop Manager, go to Control Panel, select the Nvidia option, then click on Disable on the first tab.

I updated my video driver from EVGA (card manufacturer), not nVidia as before, and now, dragging windows between monitors work.
