This is meant as a constructive post and is in no way intended to be inflammatory. If you're just here to flame then I suggest you leave now.

Lots of people have posted time and again begging for a new beta release of version 3. Being a Windows Vista user myself I'll be totally honest and say that I'm one of those waiting with anticipation.

Peoples' biggest complaint seems to be that there's no real indication that progress on the next release is being made. While I'm sure that Christian is indeed working to resolve bugs and coding new features what would be really great to see is a road map of some kind. It doesn't need to be exceptionally detailed or cover every single aspect of the project; however it would be nice to have a few mile stones that are laid out so that we, as customers, can have a look and see what's being worked on and what we can expect in the future. To give you an indication of what I mean...

PLANNED FEATURES::
* Short Term:
Complete implementation of toolbars. (eg; Media Player)

* Medium Term:
Add ability to organise application order on the task bar.

* Long Term:
Move system tray & clock to any monitor.

IMPLIMENTED FEATURES::
Aero interface.

I do have one very simple question for Christian that I would appreciate an honest answer to:
Is this a pet project (ie; something you tinker with in your free time outside of a normal 9-5 job.) Or are you fully committed to Realtime Soft and UltraMon as your primary focus?

To be honest, I don't mind either way. However I think that knowing this people will be better able to set their expectation for when a next release is likely.

Keep up the great work on this fantastic product.

Beta 2 will have support for the window buttons under Vista, as well as bug fixes. This will be released later this year, unfortunately I don't have a closer estimate yet.

Beta 3 will have a new version of the mirroring feature with Vista support. I don't know yet what other new features will be added later.

This is my full-time job, Realtime Soft is just me though.

Hi Christian,

Thanks for the response. Exact time scales aren't really all that important in my opinion, at least now people can have an idea of what to expect in comming realeases.

Once again, keep up the work and I look forward to seeing where the software goes next.

Christian, would you be willing to implement an email notification system so we can find out when there's an update to Ultramon without having to keep checking the website from time to time?
Christian Studer   2007-09-28 08:28
Currently I have no plans for an e-mail mailing list, but you could subscribe to the RSS feed from the multi-monitor resource site, any new releases will get mentioned there.

If you have already purchased UltraMon, you'll get notified via e-mail if update notifications are enabled for your account, which is the default.

Beta 1 was released 7 months ago. Can you pleaseeee tell me if beta 2 is anywhere near completion? I need Ultramon on Vista, but it crashing 2 and 3 times in an hour is just getting unbearable.

By the way, everythings the same with the first beta of Vista SP1. Ultramon still works.
Christian Studer   2007-09-30 08:20
The second beta will be released later this year.

If you get frequent Smart Taskbar errors, I would recommend installing version 2.7.1 instead. The taskbar won't match the Vista look though.

Just to clarify, later this year as in sometime in the next 3 months?

At first, I have to say, that UltraMon is really great software. It's a little buggy under Vista 64, but still, it's very good.

I agree with Pete, some new features would be great. Personally I used to use free software called Taskbar shuffle, which is supposed to allow you to arrange your tasks on taskbar as you want (more over your systray icons). And another good thing is middle mouse button task closing. Unfortunatelly, it isn't working under Vista 64.
I want to ask Christian if it's possible even to think about implementing these two (three) features?

Thanks

Kevin, yes, before the end of the year.

Martin, I'm not sure yet, currently the plan is to add support for Taskbar Shuffle to UltraMon, the author of Taskbar Shuffle has expressed interest in supporting UltraMon taskbars as well.

Not to be a pest but in 7 months theres nothing you can release now or in say the next few weeks? You can't just tie up loose ends and push the rest to beta3? Beta2 does not by any means need to be perfect.
Christian Studer   2007-10-02 10:14
Unfortunately no, several components/features are completely redesigned for Beta 2 and need to be released in one piece.

Hang in there Christian... Love your ultramon product and can wait until year end for the update.

If this is your full time job with no other employees, then best to get it out right and bug free.

Good Luck!
