I've been using Ultramon for some time on XP and it worked fine. However, with my new laptop (that I was forced to buy when my old one died) and the Ultramon version for Vista, I find that it doesn't remember that my 2nd screen is to the left of my primary. As best as I can tell, every time the laptop comes back from Vista having turned off the displays, it goes back to having the second screen to the right. So I have to re-configure that each time.
Is this a known bug and is there a fix?

This seems to be a video card driver issue, see this thread for more on this issue.
