Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Coming out of ScreenSaver Lockout removes wallpaper

First, Ultramon Rocks!

Secondly, I'm using a Radeon X300 series video card with two Dell 17" UltraSharp 1704FPVt LCD monitors.

I've got a different wallpaper on each - nothing fancy. The primary monitor has a standard XP wallpaper, and the secondary monitor has a picture from my C: drive.

Whenever my screensaver comes on, and locks my PC (when I'm away from desk) and I come back, CTRL-ALT-DEL and type in my network password to get back onto the PC, my wallpapers are MISSING!!

I can right-click Ultramon-Wallpaper in the taskbar, and re-click on APPLY, and they come back.

Any suggestions? It appears to happen constantly?

Also, whoever gave that suggestion for having the TIME in the second monitor for Ultramon3 was a great idea!

What operating system are you using?

I tested with UltraMon 2.6 on Windows XP SP2, but haven't been able to reproduce the issue.

I am experiencing the exact same problem with a Dell D600 (Radeon 9000), docking station and two 19" LCD screens. Everytime my computer's screen saver kicks in and I move the mouse to undo it, the wallpaper changes back to Windows default (blue background).

I am running Windows XP SP2 and Ultramon 2.26.23.0

I'm running the same thing :
Windows XP Professional SP2 and Ultramon 2.26.23.0

Dell OptiPlex GX280 P4 3.00Ghz
with 1.00 GB of RAM

Maybe something with the Dells?
Here's the details from my "About Ultramon"

Some things you could check:

- when you open wallpaper settings after logging in again, is your previous wallpaper still selected as the active wallpaper?

- after logging in again, go to the folder My Documents\My Wallpapers and take a look at the file <wallpaper name>.bmp, for example Default.bmp. Does the bitmap still contain the images you selected for the wallpaper, or is it blank?

- to check if the problem is caused by another background application, run msconfig.exe, select the Startup tab and disable all applications except UltraMon

- do you use a third-party network client, for example Novell?

Yup. When I log back on, and go into Ultramon Desktop - Wallpaper - it still shows up there. I then have to click on NONE, then back on "Default" and then APPLY to make it come back.

>Does the bitmap still contain the images you selected for the wallpaper, or is it blank?

Yes. The DEFAULT.BMP shows me a picture of the 2 monitor wallpaper, as it should be.

I do have a bunch of things there, but I can't tell which one would be affecting UltraMon.

>- do you use a third-party network client, for example Novell?

Maybe this is the key. I AM using the Novell Client 4.91 for Windows XP, since we have multiple Novell servers. Think that has something to do with it?

thanks again,
Brady

Same problem here, no Novell client so I don't think that could be it.
Christian Studer   2005-08-08 08:37
Thanks for the information. So far everything seems to be okay, and apparently it's not an issue related to the Novell client.

One other thing we could check are the wallpaper-related registry settings: after unlocking the system, run regedit.exe, right-click the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop' and select Export from the menu, then send me the .reg file to support@realtimesoft.com.

Chris - emailed to you.

Another interesting thing to think about. Originally when I was having this problem, I had the wallpaper on STRETCH - since my resolution was 1280x1024, and the wallpaper was not.

Since then, I've found a new wallpaper that matched the 1280x1024 - and I think that is helping quite a bit.

Also, I'm using the Matrix Code Emulator (through UltraMon) on both screens for my screensaver. I thought that was approved for dual monitor displays...but just thought I'd mention it here.

Thanks for the file, I haven't noticed anything unusual though.

Do you also have the problem if you use a different screen saver, for example Beziers?

In theory this shouldn't make a difference, but might be worth a try.

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Brady   2005-08-17 23:30
Well, maybe that was it! When I changed to BEZIERS on Monitor 1 and MYSTIFY on Monitor 2, the problem went away! No more wallpaper disappearing!

Maybe something with the Matrix screensaver? Shame, I liked the way the code flowed across the LCD screen. :(

Any other suggestions for screen savers that would work well?

thanks for the help,
Brady

The Matrix Code Emulator from Reality Rift Studios (freeware version 1.5) worked fine for me.

I had it assigned to the primary monitor, preview mode not checked, no screen saver assigned to the secondary monitors.

Settings for Matrix Code Emulator were the defaults, except that I checked 'use current resolution for all screens'.

Ah, that site is apparently blocked as "freeware." Any chance you could email it to me at brady173@gmail.com?

Thanks for the follow-up!
take care,

Hey All,

I have the same problem on my Dell 8200, GeForce3 Ti 200 video card. I am using the pipes screensaver without any custom texture, just solid colors, with password protect on. Most of the time when I come back, my wallpaper is not shown, just the default blue. Selecting the properties and clicking OK brings the wallpaper back. I will try disabling the password protect to see if that helps. I do not run much in the way of third-party software, save for Anti-Virus.

Any further suggestions for this annoying bug would be appreciated.

What happens if you use a different screen saver, for example Beziers?

I'm having the same problem here. The screen saver in use is the Aquarium 3D fish tank that ships with WinXP SP2 MCE 2005 & XP Plus. My PC is a member of a Win 2003 domain. I mention that it's not a stand alone install since some of the XP GUI enhancements are disabled when XP is a member of a domain.

I checked out all the mentioned issues in the previous posts but the problem still persists.

My about info is included below.

2 monitors
Current desktop: 2560x1024 (0,0 - 2560,1024)

Monitor 1 - ViewSonic GS771 (primary):
Settings: 1280x1024, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 0,0 - 1280,1024. Workspace: 0,0 - 1280,972
Video card: ALL-IN-WONDER 9600 SERIES
Device: \\.\DISPLAY1\Monitor0

Monitor 2 - Default Monitor:
Settings: 1280x1024, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 1280,0 - 2560,1024. Workspace: 1280,0 - 2560,994
Video card: ALL-IN-WONDER 9600 SERIES - Secondary
Device: \\.\DISPLAY2\Monitor0

Do you have the same problem when using a non-3D screen saver such as Beziers?

Christian Studer - www.realtimesoft.com
Michael   2005-09-18 04:07
No. I've tried using some of the standard screen savers and none of them produce the problem. It only seems to happen with the OpenGL & new 3D savers. This of course is a big problem since many of the 3D savers are paid for add ons. In order to justify paying for UltraMon, which I think is an otherwise great product, this issue will need to be resolved. As an additional note, this issue also happens everytime I restart the system All the other features of UltraMon work fine except the wallpaper.
Christian Studer   2005-09-18 23:52
Most likely this is due to a conflict/issue with another application.

For further troubleshooting, you could temporarily disable other background applications with msconfig.exe (on the startup tab).

If the problem goes away after a reboot, you could then re-enable applications one by one until the problem appears again to determine which application causes the issue.

This is proabably a Win XP issue. I a similar problem using entirely different hardware. Using an hp Compaq nc4010 laptop, with an external monitor and another internal monitor. The wallpaper Rarely shows up. I'll try specifying the wallpaper and a separate screen saver on the second (non-primary) monitor and see what happens...the problem being that that is probably refreshed whenever I disconnect the primary (CRT) monitor. It's a laptop, and I disconnect it daily.

-Didn't work because Win XP considers them both to be part of the same desktop.

What happened when you applied the wallpaper?

Hi All - Stopping the NVIDIA Display Driver Service (stop and set it to manual) solved this issue for me.
