Does anyone know of a tool that will allow me to use the extra portion of a widescreen laptop as a 2nd screen? I've yet to see any of my coworkers make decent use of the extra space, and it seems to be a hasle to try and resize windows to normal ratio to keep the extra space clear for IM or such.

If your laptop has an Nvidia video chipset, take a look at the display gridlines feature of their nView Desktop Manager software.
This allows you to partition displays, which affects how applications get maximized.
