I am having the same problem. Beta 3 was working fine for me. After I installed beta 4 it worked until I rebooted, now explorer crashes everytime I start ultramon.
I would like access to beta 3 again while this problem is fixed, I think my archive of it was replaced with the beta 4 file. It would be better if it wasn't always given the same name.

I have found the problem, hope to have a fix available later today.

Who is affected: Windows 98/Me users with Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Active Desktop enabled.

Cause of the Explorer crash: when UltraMon tries to save or restore the position of desktop icons, explorer.exe (the desktop/shell) crashes.

Workaround: go to UltraMon Options, and uncheck the 'Enabled' box under Desktop Icon Positioning. Also do not disable/enable secondary monitors with UltraMon (UltraMon saves/restores desktop icons when doing this).

Update: the problem is definitely with the icon save/restore functionality, but so far I haven't been able to fix it.

I have created a special version of UltraMon.dll that you can use until the real fix is available. The DLL is exactly the same as the original Beta 4 DLL, but with icon save/restore disabled.

Installing the DLL:
- download the appropriate version for your operating system:
DLL for Win98/Me
DLL for Win2000
- close UltraMon, and disable Active Desktop
- extract the DLL into the system directory, usually C:\Windows\System on Win98/Me, and C:\Winnt\System32 on Win2000

The problem is fixed.

Installing the updated version of UltraMon 2.0 Beta 4:

Option 1: install updated files only

- download the appropriate ZIP file for your operating system:
Updated files for Win98/Me
Updated files for Win2000/XP
- close UltraMon, and disable Active Desktop
- extract the ZIP into the system directory:
Win98/Me: C:\Windows\System
Win2000: C:\Winnt\System32
WinXP: C:\Windows\System32

Please note: if you are using UltraMon wallpapers on Win98, you will need to reboot after disabling Active Desktop, and then install the updated files.

Option 2: full install

- download the updated UltraMon20.msi
- uninstall the currently installed version of UltraMon from Add/Remove Programs
- install the updated UltraMon20.msi
