Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Cloning/mirroring from a laptop to a projector

I have been trying to clone or mirror the image on my laptop to a projector without success. My laptop uses a WXGA widescreen max res 1680x1050, and a ATI Mobility Radeon M11, AGP8x (9700 series). The projector has a max res of 1280x1024 and they are connected by DVI cable. The ATI menu allows extension of the desktop but not, apparently, cloning at different resolutions, despite the indications in the computer instructions and the implications in some ATI info. I have therefore very recently come across UltraMon and installed a full copy last Sunday. I had hoped that I could either use profiles to switch between using the projector and the laptop alone, or alternatively use mirroring. Unfortunately profiles seem unable to return the desktop to its original state, and it is in any event very difficult to arrive at a set-up which works for the projector on a one-off basis. When I set off mirroring, with or without hardware acceleration, it has the effect of producing many copies of the desktop from the top and bottom of the page simultaneously – very artistic but very difficult to stop using Cont, Alt and Del. Ideally I would like the simplest possible solution.
I should be grateful for any help you can give for what should in theory be possible. I have looked at the help files, but they seem to require a substantial knowledge of programming, which at this stage I do not have.

Please post the system information from the About dialog (UltraMon menu > About), maybe the monitor positions are invalid.

UltraMon does not support switching between configurations where either only the laptop monitor or only the projector are used, the problem is that this would require changing the primary monitor, which is usually not supported on laptops.

You'll need to make this change through the software for the video chipset, usually via a tab for the video chipset under advanced display properties.

The information requested is below:

2 monitors
Current desktop: 2960x1050 (0,0 - 2960,1050)

Monitor 1 - Default Monitor (primary):
Settings: 1680x1050, 32-bit color, 75 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 0,0 - 1680,1050. Workspace: 0,0 - 1680,1020
Video card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Series
Device: \\.\DISPLAY1\Monitor2

Monitor 2 - Plug and Play Monitor (removable):
Settings: 1280x1024, 32-bit color, 75 Hz refresh rate
Coordinates: 1680,0 - 2960,1024. Workspace: 1680,0 - 2960,994
Video card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 Series
Device: \\.\DISPLAY2\Monitor0

You may well be right that tne answer lies with the software for the video chipset. My desktop has an almost identical card (9800 series) where the interface is subtly different, in that the Catalyst Control Center gives a more detailed menu. ATI state that the software is identical for both cards but equivocally mention that the laptop manufacturer provides its own set of drivers, the latest of which I have installed. Trying to use ATI's generic driver for the whole series generates an error on installation on the basis that a video driver is missing (VGA or SVGA I think).

Accepting that I will be unable to use profiles because the laptop screen cannot be changed to secondary, should I be able to use mirroring to get the same screen image on both the laptop and projector? If not, is there a workaround to produce the same effect?

Many thanks for you earlier prompt reply and I should be very grateful for your comments.

Thanks for the information, the monitor positions look fine.

One other thing you could check: under settings for mirroring, make sure that the primary monitor (monitor 1) gets mirrored on monitor 2, and not the other way around.

To do this, select monitor 1, then set 'Mirror the following monitor' to (None). Then select monitor 2, and set 'Mirror the following monitor' to Monitor 1.
