3D OpenGL application works properly on second monitor when, upon launching, the application opens its application window on the second monitor. But when the application window opens on the first monitor, and I use the ultramon window button to move the application window the second monitor, the application either fails to appear or the 3D motion is very slow and jerky.

More details:

I run Solidworks, a powerful OpenGL-based, 3D rendering mechanical design package. It works smoothly and quickly on my laptop: P4-1.2 GH, Windows XP Pro, ATI Radeon 7500 running with graphics acceleration. I run the laptop's monitor at 1024x768. My second screen is a CRT, and I run it at 1280x1024.

Solidworks runs very well when it opens direclty on the primary, laptop screen. This is true even when the secondary monitor is on and displaying a few application windows. When I pop the solidworks application over to the secondary monitor, the 3D rendering is slow and jerky. When I pop the solidworks application back to the primary, laptop screen, it works nicely again. I return solidworks to the secondary screen and again I experience slow jerky 3D motion.

Interestingly, when I close solidworks while it is on the secondary monitor, I have a different experience. When I then open solidworks, now it opens directly to the secondary monitor and 3D rendering is fast and proper! Just like my experience when running the application on the primary, laptop screen. I can pop solidworks between the primary and secondary screen using Ultramon's handy button and never experience the slow down!

What's the explanation? Why must the SolidWorks application open directly into the secondary screen in order to run properly? How do I fix this situation?

Could be due to the application itself or the OpenGL driver of the video card.

Make sure you have the latest versions of the video card drivers and the application, but apart from that there's probably nothing else you can do except always close the application on the secondary monitor.

I had a simmilar problem with other OpenGL programs with an old nVidia driver. The newest drivers should fix this problem... If you are running nVidia that is ;)

I am working with Alibre (3D solid modeling) and am having similar problem of jerky motion on secondary monitor - vid card is ATI X1950 XTX, am looking for solutions, have latest drivers, have not tried closing application in secondary - will try,
