*update. This problem also presents itself if when switching between hide and show desktop icons.

The problem is that the wallpaper layout needs to be refreshed when the Active Desktop gets enabled or disabled, but UltraMon doesn't detect this automatically.

To manually refresh the wallpaper, either select Wallpaper from the UltraMon menu and click OK when asked if you want to adjust the wallpaper, or run UltraMonDesktop.exe (in the UltraMon installation folder) with the /refresh command-line argument: UltraMonDesktop.exe /refresh

The Active Desktop is only enabled when you a) have the desktop icons hidden, or b) an Active Desktop item has been added to the desktop. It is not enabled on the desktop which is shown when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL on Windows 2000.

This is only an issue if one or more monitors are positioned to the left of the primary monitor (position coordinates are negative).

Making the left hand monitor the primary display fixed the problem. Many thanks for your support.
