On my X31 laptop, I can look at the laptop display and connect an external monitor to the laptop to extend my desktop and work in a dual-head setup. My graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon, with Hydravision and allthe other ATI apps installed. I installed "UltraMon", and I got a message when I first started: "potential incompatibility - single monitor detected" or something like that, can't ermember the exact message. And I can't really use the smart taskbar feature of ultramon, which is what I wanted to use it for. What gives?

If you are using Windows 2000: drivers for older ATI cards don't have true multi-monitor support, meaning that UltraMon (and Windows) only recognize a single large monitor instead of two. See the FAQ for more on this issue.

Windows XP should not be affected by this issue (provided that updated drivers are available, which is usually the case).

The FAQ says:

"ATI has added support for the RADEON 9xxx cards, but not for earlier cards."

The video card on the IBM X31 Laptop is listed as "ATI Mobility Radeon" in all the relevant Control Panels (Display, Device Manager), how can I find out which of the categories (9xxx or earlier) that falls under?

Most likely it's an earlier card, ATI lists both a Mobility Radeon and several Mobility Radeon 9xxx chipsets on their website.

Just make sure you have the latest drivers. If you don't have two monitors listed in Windows Display Properties > Settings, the drivers don't have true multi-monitor support.

So, I just realized that I never mentioned what OS I am on. I am running windows 2000 Server, and that, according to the FAQ, upgrading to Windows XP would solve the Multi-Monitor problem for me. I don't really want to upgrade to XP - however, I could upgrade to Windows 2003 Server. My question is, do you know if the drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon (not the 9xxx edition) for Windows 2003 Server would support this feature.

Thanks,

Most likely they do, but you would need to check with ATI to make sure.

Server 2003 is the same as XP with regards to multi-monitor support.
