I don't know the GL1 myself, but I would expect it to be faster than a Permedia 2, for two reasons:
1) it is a more recent chipset, the Permedia 2 is quite dated by now
2) it is a quite expensive workstation chipset, whereas the Permedia 2 is a consumer chipset
BTW, what about the OpenGL limitations on multimon systems? On Win98, you won't get any hardware acceleration, on Win2000 it depends on the driver.
