I just added an LCD monitor and spent the last couple of days figuring out how to configure it. I have an NVidia MX2/400 card. First I had to update the drivers. I have driver version
5.13.01.1520. Then I had to find where the desktop manager was buried and how to use the features. I'm still struggling to get it all to work exactly as I want. I posted a question on the NVidia newsgroup and someone pointed me here. So I downloaded and installed UtraMon and got an error saying it didn't detect two monitors.

I have the new LCD plugged into the DVI spot and my CRT in the analog slot. Does NVidia's desktop manager functions conflict with UltraMon? I tried turning it off but that didn't help.

The issue I was trying to resolve has to do with dialog boxes spanning the two monitors. I have it setup correctly to prevent popup windows from breaking across monitor, to have center system-wide popups on primary diesplay and keep application popups & windows on one screen... I STILL end up with dialog boxes spanning the two screens. WHY? What must I change to make this work correctly?

Your help would be greatly appreciated,
Sheila

I guess you are using Windows 2000? If this is the case, you'll need to enable DualView mode, so that Windows and UltraMon can properly recognize both displays.

To do this, go to Display Properties > Advanced > Nvidia > Desktop Utilities and check 'Enable DualView' (see this screenshot).

If you don't have this option in Display Properties, you should install the latest Nvidia drivers from www.nvidia.com.

Enabling DualView will fix the problems with dialog boxes spanning across both monitors. You can then also use UltraMon's additional multi-monitor features such as the Smart Taskbar.

Christian:

Thanks for moving my message to the appropriate forum. I noticed I'd placed it incorrectly (too late) and didn't want to dual-post!

Thanks also for your speedy reply. I'm using Windows XP and already had updated my drives AND activated "Twin View". It's working fine. It sees both monitors. I've indicated my LCS as 1 and CRT as 2. And I finally found the rest of the built-in destop management stuff on a different tab (it's located 6 levels deep).

Since my system SEES dual monitors, I don't know why UltrMon doesn't see them both. However, I do know that I suddenly have a serious error with my Norton System Utilies which may or may not have any relevance.

Is it a problem to run UltraMon and the NVidia desktop management stuff at the same time? I'm wondering if that's part of my problem? When I disable the NVidia desktop manager my tray icons revert back over to the right edge of my second monitor which I dislike. And since I can't get UltraMon to even acknowledge that I'm running a second monitor none of its features are kicking in, even when I turn off the Nvidia stuff.

I'm really at a loss. I hate seeing all my popup dialog boxes spanned across the two monitors. AS I said in my first post I have it setup correctly to prevent popup windows from breaking across monitor, to have center system-wide popups on primary diesplay and keep application popups & windows on one screen... (I can send a screen capture if that'd be helpful). But for some reason it's not taking the settings and I STILL end up with dialog boxes spanning the two screens.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Doesn't seem to be a way to edit my post. I wanted to correct the typo "LCS" was suppose to read "LCD".

I also wanted to add that I closed out both the NVidia and UltraMon and was then able to reopen my Norton, no problem. I think it's the NVidia from the error message it was giving me.

Also note that my graphics card is from OEM Gateway. They sent me the newest drivers and they didn't work since this card is at least two years old. I had to use the driver I now have to get this to work as dual monitor.

Sounds like you are using span mode. In this mode, only a single monitor will be listed in Display Properties > Settings, and the taskbar will be stretched across both monitors (Start menu on one monitor, system tray with the clock on the other).

If both monitors are recognized by Windows and UltraMon, Display Properties should look like this: Display Properties with 2 monitors

You should be able to use both UltraMon and the nView Desktop Manager. The only major issue is with UltraMon mirroring, but UltraMon will warn you if it detects that the nView Desktop Manager is running.
