Forums -> UltraMon™ -> secondary monitor split screen problem.

I'm having a problem that I think is related to either the wallpaper generator, or the smart taskbar, or both.

Sometimes everything works as it should. I have one wallpaper displayed across both desktops, and it looks and acts just like it should. No screensaver problems.

But most times, when I boot up, my primary monitor looks okay, but the wallpaper on the secondary monitor is split down the middle and reversed along with the smart taskbar. If I try to open a window or application, I get that split and reversed also, and none of the windows buttons will respond.

I'm using two widescreen monitors running independent desktops. My primary is on the right and is a Sony 24" widescreen set to 1280 x 768. My secondary is on the left and is a Sony 17.1" widescreen LCD set to 1280 x 768. This is the way they appear in desktop/settings. I'm running two different refresh rates.

For wallpaper settings, I'm using a 2560 x 768 bitmap with Dispaly Properties/Desktop set to 'Tile' and Ultamon set to 'Center'.

I'm running this on a GeForce4 Ti-4600 with nVidia's Detonator 40.72 driver. I've got the nView desktop manager disabled.

Am I screwing up the settings, or is it maybe because I'm using two widescreen displays?

I really like this software, and am desperately trying to get it to work. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

Sounds like a display driver issue. There is also a compatibility issue with the 40.72 drivers and UltraMon mirroring, I've seen similar problems when using mirroring with these drivers. Nvidia is aware of this issue.

I would recommend either uninstalling UltraMon's mirroring feature or installing earlier Nvidia drivers.

To uninstall UltraMon mirroring, go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, select UltraMon, click on Change and deselect the Mirroring feature.

Thanks for the quick reply Christian.

The mirroring problem had already occurred to me. I did a fresh install with no mirroring, same problem.

I can usually get everything to work eventually, but as soon as I power down and reboot, the scondary screen becomes split again.

Which nVidia driver do you recommend? Or is there something else that may be the cause?
Could it be because I'm using two widescreen displays?

Great job btw!

It's almost certainly the display driver, I don't think any application could cause problems like this.

I guess the latest non-beta release, 30.82, should work fine, but I haven't tested this driver myself. I'm using the default XP drivers with my GeForce3/2 cards.

Thanks Christian.

I agree. I don't think it's application specific.
I'll switch back to 30.82 and see how that works.

Thanks for your help, and thanks for the trial period.

I think I've narrowed it down to nVidia's nView manager.

Everything works fine with the default WinXP nVidia driver, but as soon as I load nVidia 30.82 or one of the 40 series Detonator drivers, I get the split screen on the secondary monitor.

Still working on it.

Still having the same split screen problem on the secondary monitor.

I've tried a number of different nVidia drivers including WHQL certified 30.82 and the newest Detonator 40.72.

I've tried with nView enabled and disabled.

I've also tried starting with smart taskbar enabled and disabled.

See first post, but the main problem is if I try to open a window or application on the secondary monitor, I get a split and reversed screen (including smart taskbar) and none of the windows buttons will respond, rendering my secondary monitor useless. I can't even close the app or switch it to the primary monitor.

Am I the only one with this problem? I really like this software. I just don't seem to be able to get it to run properly on my setup.

So far the only thing that works is to continually reboot and eventually both monitors will come on correctly.

Any ideas?

Do you have the mirroring feature installed at the moment? What happens if you close UltraMon when you have the drawing problems on the secondary monitor?

It would also be helpful to have a screenshot of the desktop, you can mail it to support@realtimesoft.com.

No, I don't have the mirroring feature installed, but I did at one point.

I uninstalled and did a frsh install without mirroring, but there's still some stuff left in the registry related to the Ultramon mirror driver.

I'm at a point now where my secondary monitor is useless. Even uninstalling Ultramon leaves me with a split, reversed image and no functionality for any mouse commands. I can sort of navigate with the keyboard.

The weird part is that when I take a screenshot, I can open it in Paint or Photoshop, and it looks fine. No split screen, just the way it's supposed to be. Strange.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Ultramon and video drivers so much that I think I'm just going to format and start over. Registry is all screwed up.

Christian,

Thought I'd let you know that my split screen problem is definitely NOT related to Ultramon.

I formatted my drive and reinstalled everything but Ultramon. As soon as I install an nVidia driver that incorporates nView, the split screen shows up.

I'm moving this topic over to the multi-monitor forum.

Thanks for your help. You'll see another purchase of Ultramon as soon as I get this figured out.

Christian,

Just to update you on this problem, it turned out to be a conflict with running two widescreen monitors on a GeForce4 Ti4600.

I was trying to run a Sony 24" 16:10 CRT monitor along with the new Sony 17.1" 16:9 LCD.

Solved the problem by returning the 17.1" Sony and getting a Viewsonic VX900. Works perfectly now.

I contacted nVidia about it, and haven't gotten much of a response except for an e-mail asking for more info.
