I'm using UltraMOn with a Matrox dual head PCI 16 MB g450.
While the additional ultramon buttons appear in the windows, they are blanked out and don't work.
As well, not all of my taskbar items appear on the taskbar even though the windows still exist. I have tried both the "mirroring" and "invidual" modes.

I guess you are using Windows 2000, you'll have to enable true multi-monitor support (independent displays/resolutions).
This option is located on the Matrox dualhead properties page. If you don't have this option, you'll have to install newer drivers. Make sure to enable independent displays (or advanced multi-monitor support, something like this) during setup.

It worked.
I updated the drivers, and not only do I now have two desktops instead of one big one, UltraMon works.
