I've had the two following multimon combinations and both combinations worked great in everything EXCEPT Lotus 123. Is there anyway to find out if it's a hardware conflict - as Lotus swears it is - or a software defect? I'm running Windows 2000.

First combination:
Diamond Viper V770 Ultra AGP w/ 32MB (TNT2) & Diamond Stealth III S540 PCI w/ 32MB (Savage4)

Second combination:
Diamond Viper V770 Ultra AGP w/ 32MB (TNT2) & Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro PCI w/ 8MB (Permedia2).

Like I said, I can run multimonitor all day long (and all night long) with multiple programs, but when I use Lotus 123, the machine eventually locks - and requires a hardware reset to reboot.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Looks like a compatibility issue between the Nvidia drivers and Lotus 123.

If you are using Nvidia reference drivers, try the default Windows 2000 drivers instead. If the problem goes away, it's an Nvidia issue.

Hmmm... I'm using the standard MS drivers - not NVidia's.

But I would also think that if it were NVidia drivers (or drivers related to the TNT2 chipset) I would see the lockups when running single monitor mode on just the Viper. I've tried to get lockups with all three cards during single monitor mode, but no lockups. (By removing the other adapter and running each adapter by itself in the machine.)

I'm actually sort of hoping that I've found an application that cannot deal with multiple monitor mode. Lotus technical support has admitted that 123 does try to take advantage of the graphical hardware - why some lockups with 123 are "fixed" by disabling hardware acceleration. I'm just hoping that I've found a hardware combination that 123 can't deal with.

I guess you're right, looks like you found the first app that crashes on a multimon system... quite a feat, I wonder what sort of weird stuff Lotus 123 is doing!

Just an update. I thought that the problem that I'm experiencing with the two Diamond adapters and Lotus 123 could be related to the fact that they are both Diamond adapters - meaning that they have similar hardware monikers for the software to access directly. And for me to "fix" this, I went ahead and purchased an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 PCI 32MB adapter.

Bad news. After installing the ATI adapter, I experienced lockups in IE5.5, and just general programs - such as the configuration of the ATI adapter. So I came here and saw that someone else has this combination and doesn't seem to have any problems. Crud. I made some BIOS settings - AGP primary (instead of PCI), etc. And all the lockups but the 123 ones went away.

So I went into my BIOS and started checking all the settings and experienced three lockups while trying to change BIOS settings. I did notice that the CPU temp was excessively hot also (though I'm not overclocking.)

That settles it. I'm tanking this motherboard and CPU.

So now my question is: What motherboard would be a "recommended" one for running a Viper V770 AGP, an ATI AIW 128, and comes with an Intel 815e chipset? Anyone have any experience with something of this sort?

TIA!

Well, I'm finally using multiple monitors without any problems. I ended up dumping the Tyan Tomahawk BX (S1856) motherboard. I purchased an Asus CUSL2 and a PIII/933 CPU.

This CUSL2 is awesome - and will also be if you want to run multiple monitors. It has 6 PCI slots - of which only Slot 1 and Slot 5 share IRQs. Also consider that it has ATA100 on board.

Currently, I'm using the Diamond Viper V770 Ultra (AGP 32MB) in AGP 4X mode, and an ATI All-In-Wonder (PCI 32MB), and still have two slots to play with. I'm considering popping in that old Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro, and another monitor. (!!! And I'll still have a non-shared PCI slot available!!!!)

But the bottom line was that it was the Tyan that caused the problem - who knows how or why but now the lockups are gone....

Thanks for all the help!
